About the Artist
Mark paints in oils, working with perhaps just three or four colours. His subjects are mainly abstract and semi-abstract land and sea-scapes. He works with a palette knife and rag to blend and drag the paint and will also add strands of rope fibre or ground-down coloured slate, sheep’s wool or sea-salt to add texture. At the same time he might also make use of a knife to scrape or gouge the work to create lines of movement and dynamic.
Mark works to communicate what might be felt and heard as well as seen. Achievement for him is when all of the viewer’s senses are engaged. So, when they look at the work, what they experience is more like a narrative, something almost filmic. Mark paints as a story-teller.
