Paddy Bailie

I am a contemporary artist specialising in semi-abstract and impressionistic paintings with an emphasis on the landscape and the natural environment.

I have lived in Sussex for 50 years and I am now based in Storrington.

Inspiration for my work frequently comes from travelling through and over the landscape where I  capture the shapes, forms, light and colours with the  hope of conveying the sensual experience of being there. Most of my work is  oil on canvas. Preparatory sketches are often drawn on paper in charcoal, pen and ink with the addition of mixed media and collage.

I usually work on themes enjoying the journey of what the paint will do and how the marks and colours interact with each other. I build up layers of paint frequently wiping and scrapeing them back to reveal their history and developing a greater intensity and depth in the work.

Recent topics have included ‘Cloudscapes’, ‘Through the Clouds’ and ‘Up in the Clouds’. These have originated from memorable holiday flights over Europe. Regular walks on the local hills have resulted in the ‘South Downs’ canvases.

I attend courses at the Seawhite Studio, Partridge Green and have exhibited and entered local shows and competitions.
